We Got Spoiled Having Central Air in the House
Remember the days of playing outside all summer long? The fire department would slightly open a fire hydrant on really hot days so us kids could play and be cool in the water. No one had a swimming pool in our neighborhood. Now everyone seems to just stay indoors on hot days. They might venture out in the evening if it is cool enough. That is the only time I see anyone sitting on their porch. Even in our family we were more interested in calling AC repair in NYC than just going out and sitting on the porch because it was too hot inside. Of course, I must admit, it was really hot without the AC working. I had lost all my childhood lack of caring for if it was hot, cold, rainy or sunny. You know, the attitude of just wanting to play no matter what.
Now it is binge-watching TV series on streaming video and eating popcorn with the AC running in the background keeping everyone cool. When that AC went off, it was like losing the power during that storm last year. After it was off for hours, we found ourselves out on the porch with the tiki torches lit and having fun reminiscing about old times. When the power came back on, it was no time until us and the kids were back inside basking in the glow of electronic screens. When the AC went off, it was really hot. It was muggy outside on the porch. You just sweat sitting still, and the bugs were no help in making us be in the mood to reminisce. Not mosquitoes at night but gnats and flies during the day. We are spoiled. We needed the AC back on. We promised to do a game night together as a family as long as it was at the dining room table with the AC working.
