The Day I Knew We Were Successful As a Family Owned Company
I remember the first time I thought we had made it as a company. It wasn’t when we reached a milestone for sales or having a certain number of customers. It wasn’t even when we moved into a larger space so we could have more offices. It was when we stopped cleaning our own offices and hired a cleaning company in Toronto to do it for us. I know it might sound silly, but that is the day I thought we had finally arrived to a significant position in the corporate marketplace. For years my wife and I ran the business on our own. Then we hired some employees. We all cleaned our own spaces. Then work got to the point that we did not have the time to do it.
I remember the first week of no longer cleaning the restrooms myself. My wife and I own the company and would clean the bathrooms in the evenings at our office. We were operating on a thin profit margin, and we did as much of the work ourselves that we could. When we hired the cleaning company in Toronto to clean the place, I thought I would have to micromanage them until they got it right. I was wrong. They really know their stuff. They have the same kind of work ethic that my wife and I have. They do it right the first time to keep customers happy.
We liked their performance so much at our offices that we eventually hired them to clean our home. It was really nice to have a little more free time to do things other than just work. We know what it is like to have a business and do everything from getting clients to cleaning the bathrooms. Now we know what it is like to get good people to share in the workload.
